The Merrill Triple Rs FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge Robotics team — made up of 10 enthusiastic 4th and 5th grade students — recently won the Innovative Project award at the Michigan State Tournament! To get to the state level they got 1st place in the regional FLL tournament. Their win has earned them the honor of representing Michigan at the Florida Sunshine Invitational, a national-level competition that brings together top FLL teams from around the world.
This year’s FLL theme centered on ocean exploration, and the Merrill Triple Rs chose to tackle the problem of ocean pollution. Their solution? Creating and distributing beach cleaning kits to Michigan State Parks to help stop pollution before it ever reaches the ocean. So far, they’ve sent out over 40 kits, and they plan to share even more at the Invitational in Florida — one for each participating team!
As part of their ongoing efforts, the team will be hosting a beach cleanup event on Earth Day — April 22nd at Bay City State Park, one of the first parks to receive a kit. Join us on the beach from 9–11 AM and help protect the Great Lakes and beyond. The event is also officially registered with the Alliance for the Great Lakes.
Our mission is to inspire a passion for design, coding, and engineering in young minds — and competing on a national stage brings us one step closer to that goal. Thank you for supporting these bright and dedicated young innovators!
